Bolzano is starting its next Champions League campaign

It's going to be an instructive season for the Foxes in the Champions Hockey League, that's for sure! HCB Südtirol Alperia received an ice hockey lesson from Swiss champions Servette Geneva on Thursday evening.

First Mannheim, then Ilves Tampere and now Geneva: The opponents in the Champions Hockey League have so far proven to be too powerful for HC Bozen. The ICE runner-up lost to Servette 1:6.

Bozen played with similar commitment as in Mannheim and was much more disciplined than against Ilves. All in all, it wasn't a bad performance that the Foxes gave to the almost 4700 spectators in the Les Vernets stadium. And yet: they were clearly shown the limits!

Former NHL superstar Valtteri Filppula and his teammates were repeatedly given immense freedom in the HCB defense, which they used callously. Bolzano had two great chances through Lucas Lessio when the score was 0:1 and through Brad McClure shortly before the score was 0:3, but did not take advantage of them. Servette moved up and away with two hits per third. Former Swiss legionnaire Josh Teves couldn't prevent that either, who showed good signs on his debut and had Bozen line up with three pairs of defenders for the first time.

The key scenes

Caught coldOnce again, the HCB fell behind early: a long-range shot was decisively deflected by Marc-Antoine Pouliot, and Bozen's Blake Parlett was also still on the skate. It's 1-0 (5th).
What a thing! After a wonderful individual action from Lucas Lessio, Robert Mayer unpacks a monster save. Even with Scott Valentine's follow-up shot, Geneva's master goalie surpasses himself (8th).
Svedberg holds (almost) everythingHCB goalie Niklas Svedberg repeatedly stands in the way of the Swiss' rolling attacks. He was lucky when Vincent Praplan shot against the post (9th), but was powerless when Marco Miranda made it 2-0 (18th).
The next thing!Brad McClure has the second HCB top-class player on his hands. He moves all by himself into the attacking third and can choose the corner - but that's exactly where Mayer reaches with his lightning-fast catching hand (25th).
Servette moves awayInstead of Bolzano finding its way back into the game, Geneva closed the sack. Immediately after McClure's missed chance, Josh Jooris somewhat happily increased the score to 3-0 (26th), a little later Svedberg didn't look good for the only time that evening when Teemu Hartikainen made it 4-0 (28th).
Ford's premiereThe Foxes can still celebrate once: Lessio serves Connor Ford, who was left alone in front of the goal. The Canadian newcomer scores his first goal in Europe unhindered (43rd). But the 1:4 no longer creates excitement - also because Servette scores two more goals a little later through Vincent Parplan (44th) and Pouliot (48th).

After these three amazing games, the Foxes want to finally get their first win in the premier class on Saturday against the Belfast Giants, who are also still pointless. Bottom of the table Bozen absolutely has to score points in the remaining games against the Irish, Lahti and Stavanger in order not to let their dream of reaching the round of 16 collapse.
