The diagnosis is in: Mikael Frycklund will be out for this long

Italy's national team not only suffered a defeat against Ukraine at the B World Cup on Monday, but also lost a key player. The diagnosis has now been revealed.

HC Pustertal looked toward Sfântu Gheorghe with concern on Monday. The Romanian World Cup venue had a scary moment involving Mikael Frycklund. The Italian-Swede, a key player both for the Pustertal Valley and for the Italian national team, sustained an injury in his Azzurri's match against Ukraine.

Frycklund's injury was so severe in overtime that he had to leave the ice with support from teammates. Shortly afterward, the Italian Ice Hockey Federation announced that the 31-year-old striker's World Cup was over. HC Pustertal has now announced the exact diagnosis. Frycklund suffered a broken ankle in the incident.

Six weeks break

"Mikael is expected to return to the Bruneck hospital tomorrow (Wednesday) for further examinations, where he will undergo surgery on Monday by the HCP's medical officers," the Wolves said in a statement. The recovery period is expected to be six weeks. Even though it's a bitter pill to swallow for Frycklund, whose contract in the Pustertal Valley was extended just a few days ago, he should be fit again for the new season.
