An ice hockey festival without a Pusterer happy ending

This season, HC Pustertal stands for one thing above all: spectacle! On Sunday evening, the Wolves had a really hot dance with the Eagles in Villach, which the Carinthians ultimately won - with the result of 5:4 after a penalty shootout. Speed, duels, goals, excitement - the more than 3000 fans in Villach got their money's worth.

So it is a fact that after six wins in a row, the HCP has now suffered three defeats en suite. However, the black and yellow fans have no reason to worry. Because the way the Wolves played on Sunday evening was extremely strong - at least as far as the offense was concerned. Mikael Frycklund, Alex Petan, David Morley and, above all, comebacker Rick Schofield (he scored twice) repeatedly pulled the two dozen Puster fans who had traveled with them out of their seats.

However, the Pusterers from Villach, who have one of the strongest teams this year, were also shown in which areas they are still lacking. The defense was anything but solid against the nimble, creative and strong Carinthians on several occasions.

Probably the most important insight of the evening: Pustertal is a real team. Although they were temporarily behind 1:3 and 2:4, the Tomek Valtonen team showed great morale and fought back strongly. The reward was a point; the HCP is now in 3rd place in the table. But then Villach turns the match around: Sabolic (after a breakaway), Rauchwald (with a shot over Smith's shoulder) and Hancock (with a powerful hammer) make it 3-1 within six minutes. Him of all people Pustertal's Arvin Atwal, actually a defender, is surprisingly called up in the fourth line of attack this time - and promptly scores (43'). Then Wallenta, with the help of the Wolves (Hannoun cannot get the puck under control), restores the old distance (47th) – 2:4. Rick's big show Villach's 4:2 lead only lasted eight (!) seconds. Then Rick Schofield simply sinks an Akeson pass into the box (47th). A little later, the second best power play in the league strikes: Petan, Morley and Schofield play one-touch ice hockey and the score is 4:4! What a goal worth seeing, what a thrilling match (51st). Penalties Overtime doesn't produce a winner, so penalties are necessary. And here the Villach team showed better nerves with two converted attempts. The Black and Yellows continue on Friday with the away game at the Vienna Capitals.
