A great ice hockey career comes to an end

It had already been announced, and now it's confirmed: Dominique Heinrich has announced the end of his active career as a professional ice hockey player, as he announced in an ORF interview on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old defender was unable to reach an agreement with the Vienna Capitals on a contract extension, and a move was no longer an option for family reasons. Heinrich played 128 games for the Austrian national team, including at the most recent World Cup.

There, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Although at 1,75 m, he's a small defender, the Viennese was one of the top defenders on the national team for over a decade, scoring 20 goals for the team. With 16 points at senior World Championships, only Herbert Hohenberger and Gerhard Unterluggauer (18 each) are ahead of him among defenders.
