In Villach: Wolves lose the last test

HC Pustertal suffered a narrow defeat in the last test match before the start of the season. The Wolves lost to their direct league rivals Villach.

Before the season in the ICE Hockey League begins on September 15th with the home game against the Pioneers Vorarlberg, Tomek Valtonen's team tested their form for the last time. At Villacher SV, Jason Akeson & Co. had to admit defeat 3:4 after an up and down game. This means the HCP preparation comes to an end with three wins and four defeats.

The starting phase in Villach clearly belonged to the HCP: Jason Akeson rounded the Villach goal in the 5th minute and Daniel Catenacci was able to use his pass to make it 1-0. The wolves continued to set the tone afterwards. Towards the middle of the third, Mikael Frycklund narrowly missed making it 2-0 with a deflection. In the 14th minute, the VSV equalizer came out of nowhere: Alex Wall escaped the black and yellow defense and gave Jacob Smith no chance with a well-placed shot. In the final phase, events came to a head: First, Raphael Andergassen hit the outside post when he was outnumbered, then a second HCP crack had to go to the bench and finally Robert Sabolic gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

It goes up and down

In the middle third, the two teams played with an open mind - with numerous chances on both sides. First, Akeson equalized the score with a shot like a line in the double majority, but Rauchwald brought the Eagles - again in the majority - back in front after a sugar pass from Hughes. Further great chances from Schofield (1 on 1) and Sabolic (from point-blank range) were thwarted by brilliant reflexes from Swette and Smith.

The Wolves dominated the game in the final period and were rewarded in the 44th minute: Morley played the puck through his own legs in front of the VSV goal, where Zach Sill slotted it in to make it 3-3. As the game progressed, the Black and Yellows were closer to taking the lead. However, Hughes managed to do this in one of the home team's few relief attacks.
