Just before the playoffs start: Bolzano is seething with anger
What on earth is going on here? That's what many Bolzano ice hockey fans must have been asking themselves on Friday evening during the top-of-the-table clash against league leaders Klagenfurt. The Foxes suffered a clear defeat – and yet emotions ran high.

HCB Südtirol Alperia lost their final home game before the playoffs 3-6. The league leaders from Klagenfurt dismantled the Foxes with masterful composure, while the hosts completely lost their composure. They repeatedly clashed with opponents, but especially with the referees.
The referees, Christian Ofner from Carinthia and Milan Zrnic from Slovenia, made petty, sometimes questionable decisions – and that was enough to turn not only the 3.000 Bolzano fans against them, but also the players in white and red. After a balanced first period, they threw all decorum out the window and punished themselves with indiscipline. The Klagenfurt players only had to provoke the Foxes slightly, and they promptly received a penalty.
And so it came to pass that the league's best away team took all three points against the best home team. It was Klagenfurt's 17th away win – a new club record. Even the return of Mark Barberio couldn't help Bolzano. The best HCB defenseman returned after months of injury, but Dustin Gazley was unavailable. He watched from the stands as his teammate Brad McClure was awarded the Gino Pasqualotto Prize, the trophy that Bolzano fans bestow upon the player with the most fighting spirit.
Brad McClure received the award from the representatives of the fan association and Gino Pasqualotto's son Alex (center).
The awards ceremony before the game was the only celebratory moment of the evening; after that, things got really hectic both on and off the ice. Between the numerous stoppages in play, Bolzano was almost constantly fighting to overcome a three-goal deficit.Muzzle for the Foxes
But whenever tension seemed to build, referee whistles, completely disproportionate reactions from the Foxes, and Klagenfurt's composed play restored order. In the end, it remained an undignified spectacle – and this happened right in front of league boss Christian Feichtinger, who had traveled to Bolzano for the top-of-the-table clash. After the game, HCB imposed a gag order on its players, meaning there were no routine interviews in the locker room. The highlights
| Barberio carelessness | In Klagenfurt's 1-0 lead, comeback player Barberio played a key role. While attempting to stop a KAC attack, he was outmaneuvered by Mursak, who scored a fraction of a second later (24th minute). |
| Overload Fraser | The Bolzano players are frustrated with the nitpicking referees and their lack of discipline. And the Klagenfurt players? They remain completely calm and politely say thank you. Fraser scores twice from close range on the power play (35th, 38th minute), single-handedly leading KAC to a 3-0 lead. |
| Mantenuto prank | Bolzano came out of the second intermission with plenty of energy and promptly rewarded themselves with the first goal. After a shot by Brunner, the wily Mantenuto scored from an impossibly sharp angle (42nd minute). |
| Fan interruption | Now the penalty minutes are raining down – and the Foxes are losing their temper. DiGiacinto and McClure are sent to the penalty box for dissent, and Schwinger converts the 5-on-3 power play into a 4-1 lead (47th minute). Objects are repeatedly thrown onto the ice from the stands, forcing the game to be suspended for more than five minutes. |
| Goal confusion | Four more goals were scored in the last twelve minutes alone. Bolzano fought back repeatedly with goals from Frigo (48th minute) and DiGiacinto (59th minute), but Klagenfurt's Hochegger (52nd minute) and Schwinger (60th minute) sealed the deserved away victory in the turbulent final phase. |
HC Bozen now sits two points ahead of fifth-placed Olimpija Ljubljana ahead of their away game in Feldkirch on Sunday. who suffered an overtime defeat in Bruneck on Friday. Since it was the last regular-season game for the Slovenians, Bolzano can no longer be knocked out of fourth place. This means the two-time champions will start their quarterfinal campaign with a home game on March 10th – possibly against HC Pustertal.
