Marchetti’s big HCB return: “Our goal is the title”

"We have set ourselves the goal of bringing the best Italians to Bozen," HCB boss Dieter Knoll recently stressed in an interview with SportNews. 13 local players are currently under contract with the Foxes, and each of them has already gained experience in the national team. One of them is Michele Marchetti, who is now embarking on his second adventure with Bozen.

It is no secret that young players have a hard time establishing themselves quickly in the ICE Hockey League. There are few places available and the coaches' trust is usually low. There are many examples of talented players who dare to make the leap to the ICE, only to be forced to take a step back two years later. Michele Marchetti also experienced the hardships of the business first hand. The Fassaner moved to the Füchse in 2016, when he was not even 22 years old. Although he was able to play regularly in the first season, he had a tough time in the following season.

"The first year was very positive, I played a lot for my age. When Pat Curcio was fired the following autumn, the situation changed," says the winger. Nevertheless, that season was one of the best and most unforgettable in his career, as he won the title in the then EBEL with the Foxes. "We were way down at the bottom of the table, but somehow we made it to the playoffs and did something there that no one will ever forget." The two seasons in Bozen were wonderful and helped Marchetti to mature both as a player and as a person.

However, the move to Asiago in the Alps Hockey League in 2018 made sense for his own development. "I was far away from home and it made me more professional. Looking back, it was the right move because I improved a lot. It was certainly helpful to play an important role in a team that is at the top," explains Marchetti. On the high plateau, the now 30-year-old won the AlpsHL once, the Italian championship twice and the Supercup three times. Stefano Marchetti's brother also found personal happiness in Asiago, which is why he can only be found in Bolzano occasionally in the summer and prepares alone in his new home.

In recent years, the robust and fast striker has developed into one of Italy's most reliable scorers, which has not gone unnoticed in Bolzano. The Foxes signed Marchetti back seven years after his departure. "The main reason why I decided to make this move is the sporting perspective," emphasises Marchetti. "Bolzano has had a winning culture for many years. The aim every year is to win the title. The situation in Asiago is a little different. They are newer to the league and need to establish themselves first," says Marchetti, who feels ready in every respect for his second HCB adventure.

He has matured compared to his first HCB interlude and is in a completely new phase of his career. "I have learned that every player has to play to his strengths. For me it is speed, shooting and robustness. If you concentrate on your strengths, it is also easier to improve the other areas," emphasises Marchetti, who will meet five former Asiago teammates in Bolzano. "That influenced my decision. Gianluca Vallini and I have known each other since we were 13. The same goes for Luca Frigo. I have an excellent relationship with all the players and am very familiar with them," Marchetti reveals.

The level of the league has increased again this year. Teams like the Vienna Capitals or the Graz 99ers, who were weak last season, are to be reckoned with again. "It's all very balanced. But we are the Foxes and we will do everything we can to be the best team," Marchetti says combatively. The Trentino native will officially start the new season with his new club on August 18th. That's when the HCB's traditional training camp begins in Corvara. Until then, he'll be getting in shape in Asiago.
