After medical advice: KAC star must retire

The Austrian national ice hockey team player Johannes Bischofberger has to end his active career at the age of 31 for health reasons.

His employer, Klagenfurter AC, announced on Monday that the injuries he has suffered in recent years no longer make it safe for him to play ice hockey at the highest level.

On the advice of doctors, the Vorarlberg native, who had suffered several concussions in recent years, therefore drew a line under it.

It hurts "doubly that I can't make the decision to retire entirely on my own, but rather that I have to accept the situation," said Bischofberger, who has worn the Red Jackets' jersey for the past nine years. "Thanks to the medical team, many of whom have contributed over the years to helping me get back on the ice several times."

Bischofberger was part of Klagenfurt's championship teams in 2018/19 and 2020/21. Now, "a new phase of my life awaits," he said. "You'll definitely hear from me."
