Bankruptcy in Graz: HCP crisis has no end
HC Pustertal suffered a clear defeat in the ICE Hockey League on Wednesday evening. The Wolves' performance was not terrible, but in the end it was clearly not enough.

There must be a reason why the Graz 99ers have collected 19 more points than the HC Pustertal. On Wednesday evening, the Wolves felt this difference. It was not a class difference - but the Styrian team was superior in all respects. The merciless efficiency brought the HCP a 1:4 defeat.
One thing to note: HC Pustertal completely slept through half of the game. The Wolves were (far) lacking offensively for around 30 minutes. Only then did Alex Petan & Co. come closer to Graz goalie Jonas Gunnarsson's goal. But he didn't let that deter him and shone with a fantastic save rate of 97 percent.
highlights of the match
Double whammy | Graz starts disjointedly, but is more dangerous. Ticar deflects a Bailey shot to make it 1-0 (14th minute). Shortly afterwards, Haudum scores, benefiting from a wonderful assist from Ganahl, to make it 2-0 at halftime (17th minute). The HCP was nonexistent offensively. |
power play goal | While Frycklund sits in the cooler, Graz strikes again. Haudum serves Vela in the slot, who beats Bernard with a powerful shot into the far corner (23'). Shortly before the 2nd period siren, a 99ers goal is disallowed for a high stick. Pustertal continues to be too harmless offensively, even if Akeson is at least able to make a few highlights. |
HCP wakes up | In the final third, the Wolves invest more in the offense, but the strong Gunnarsson doesn't allow anything. On the other side, Haudum hits the Bernard goal with his second shot in the third period to make it 2-3. The HCP goalie, who let a Zündel shot bounce forward, looked unlucky. |
power play goal 2 | The Wolves put the finishing touches to the game. Frycklund scored with a powerful wrist shot during the power play to make it 4-1. But the goal was nothing more than a cosmetic result. |
The defeat in Graz has made the situation for the HCP increasingly precarious. Instead of fighting for direct qualification for the quarter-finals, the Wolves are getting closer and closer to the stragglers Asiago and Innsbruck after eight defeats in a row. The Tyrolean derby against the HCI (Friday, 8:19.15 p.m. in Bruneck) will definitely be a test of nerves for the Pustertal team.
