Spornberger: Sorted out in Italy, in demand in Germany

Peter Spornberger is one of the prominent players who failed to make the cut for Italy's World Cup squad on Wednesday. "I'm a bit angry," says the young Rittner, but at the same time, he has no reason to worry about his sporting future.

First, he was used only sparingly in the playoffs for HC Bozen, then he was eliminated in the semifinals by Salzburg with the Foxes. And now Peter Spornberger has suffered another blow: After two weeks of World Cup preparation, he was – together with five other cracks – was removed from Italy’s final squad for the 1st Division (Group A) tournament.

Spornberger was informed of the unexpected news on Wednesday morning. "We were told this in front of the entire team. That's fine, too; the meeting was announced well in advance," the defender reported. However, he added: "Everyone who was at training camp would have deserved a call-up. The decision certainly wasn't easy for the coaches. Nevertheless, I'm disappointed, and also angry."

Before returning to South Tyrol last summer, Spornberger played in the DEL for three seasons. "I've also performed consistently on the national team over the past four years. That's why it's really annoying to have to watch the World Cup now," said the 26-year-old. When asked if he'll watch the games on TV, he replied: "Probably not, that's really painful. But of course I'll keep myself up to date and stay in touch with my teammates."

Spornberger now wants to "gain some distance" and try to clear his head. However, he will not be gloomy about it, and why should he? As paradoxical as the situation may seem, the defensive specialist from Ritten is a sought-after man. For one thing, HCB boss Dieter Knoll had already SportNews interview hinted that they absolutely want to rely on Spornberger. On the other hand, a completely different option is opening up.

Before returning to the DEL

Spornberger, who holds a German license due to his DEL past, has piqued the interest of several German first-division teams. His return to the DEL is imminent. "I can't say much at the moment," he says. In any case, the Italian chapter seems to be closing (for now) for the man from Oberinn am Ritten – unintentionally in terms of the national team, but intentionally in terms of club matters.
