Sidney Crosby is much more than just a hockey player in Canada. He is idolized by his teammates, a true national hero, and the man who, like no other, embodies success. He won gold at both of his only two Olympic appearances, in 2010 (when he scored the game-winning goal) and 2014. The outrage was all the greater, then, when the 38-year-old had to leave the ice injured in the quarterfinals against the Czech Republic.
What happened? Midway through the second period, the Pittsburgh Penguins' superstar tried to evade a hit from hardman Radko Gudas. In doing so, Crosby twisted his right knee. After being tackled by two other Czech players, Canada's captain limped to the bench and eventually to the locker room. Shortly afterward, the Maple Leafs announced that Crosby would not return to the game.
Crosby doubtful for semi-finals
The hockey icon then demonstrated his leadership qualities, as coach John Cooper revealed after the game. According to Cooper, Crosby gave a speech during the second intermission, encouraging his teammates. "They vowed that this wouldn't be Crosby's last Olympic game," said Cooper. And indeed, Connor McDavid and his teammates managed to turn a 2-3 deficit into a 4-3 overtime victory. "It's obviously tough when you see your captain like that. I hope he can be back for the next game," said defenseman Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings.Sidney Crosby was injured during this check by Radko Gudas. © APA/afp / ALEXANDER NEMENOV
The following day, all eyes were still on Crosby and his injured leg. Cooper stated during practice that another appearance by Crosby at the Olympics was a possibility, even though he didn't participate in Thursday's session. Fans on social media reacted positively to this news, as Crosby remains one of Canada's most important players even at his advanced age.
The three-time Stanley Cup winner doesn't have much time to recover, as the semi-final against Finland is already scheduled for Friday at 4:40 pm.
