A little ice hockey miracle: Austria amazes

The ÖEHV team was down 1:6 after two periods against world champions Canada in Prague on Tuesday, played themselves into a frenzy in the final section and gave the record world champions five goals with merciless efficiency. In extra time, superstar John Tavares finally shot the heavy favorite to a 7:6 victory.

Austria had never scored more than two goals in a competition game against the record world champions, but on Tuesday the Canadians, who came with many NHL stars, broke all the barriers in the finish. After Benjamin Nissner (1th) made it 2-11, Benjamin Baumgartner (44th), Peter Schneider (45th, 56th), Dominic Zwerger (51st) and Marco Rossi (60th) made a comeback that ended in the Austrian ice hockey history. Austria scored a point against Canada for the second time in history, also in Prague (2004:2) after 2.

Before that, a match developed for two thirds as was to be expected. The Canadians, who came with many NHL stars, showed their class and constantly established themselves in the attacking third, the red-white-red outsiders defended themselves with a lot of fighting spirit. Dylan Cozens (7th) and Kaiden Guhle (10th) quickly put the defending champions in the lead, but the Austrians also got a sense of success with their first chance. After preparatory work by Mario Huber, Nissner made it 1:2 (11th). An unfortunate action resulted in the third goal being conceded, a shot from Bowen Byram well wide of the goal bounced off Paul Huber's hip into the goal (14th).

First the young star hits, then comes Austria's show After a goal from Jared McCann (23rd), Connor Bedard (30th) also scored. The young star scored his fifth goal of the tournament, making him the top scorer and the first 18-year-old since Sidney Crosby in 2006 to score in his first three World Cup games.

Pierre-Luc Dubois scored Canada's sixth goal (38th), but the Austrians turned up the heat in the final third and started a comeback that will go down in the history books.
