Finland has become ice hockey world champion for the first time since 2022, prolonging Switzerland's final trauma.

The Northern Europeans defeated the World Championship hosts in Zurich 1-0 (0-0, 0-0, 0-0, 1-0) in overtime, securing their fifth title overall. Konsta Helenius of the Buffalo Sabres scored the game-winner in overtime, handing Switzerland their fifth final defeat after losses in 2013, 2018, 2024, and 2025.
In their previous nine victories at this World Championship in Zurich, the Swiss had dominated their opponents from the outset – thanks in part to the support of their fans. Finland, on the other hand, managed to counter the hosts with toughness and a strong defense. Swiss goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni was clearly more in the spotlight than his counterpart, Justus Annunen.
Switzerland lacked scoring threat for a long time
Even with a two-man advantage, the Swiss failed to trouble NHL goaltender Annunen at the start of the second period. Coach Jan Cadieux's team's performance was reminiscent of their goalless performances in the 2024 and 2025 World Championship finals under then-coach Patrick Fischer. Midway through the second period, the Swiss managed to put their opponents under pressure. Shot after shot came at Annunen's goal. Finland, on the other hand, only managed two shots on goaltender Genoni.Decision in extra time
The defensive lines dominated the third period as well. Finland became more dangerous again, but Switzerland had the best chances. Just like last year in Stockholm, the game went into overtime after a scoreless 60 minutes.In extra time, the Finns hit the post (62nd minute), and shortly afterwards Switzerland's Damien Riat hit the crossbar (64th minute). Then Helenius (71st minute) found the net and made Finland world champions.
