Italian ice hockey mourns the loss of an exceptional player

Jason Cirone may have come from Toronto, Canada, but he left his mark on ice hockey in Italy. For years he was a goal-scoring center for Asiago, and the center also played for the Italian national team, for which he played at the World Championships and the 2006 Olympic Games. Now Cirone has died at the age of 53 from the effects of a tumor.

Cirone was drafted in the third round by NHL team Winnipeg in 1989 and played three games for the Jets in the best league in the world. At just 21 years old, he made the first move to Europe, where he joined Asiago. After just one season, however, Cirone returned to North America, where he played in the American Hockey League and the International Hockey League (which was a professional league in the USA and Canada).

In the summer of 2000, Cirone made his final move to Europe, where he made a name for himself at Asiago, scoring 218 points in 211 games. For years, the Canadian with Italian roots was part of the Azzurri, for whom he played a total of 76 games and also took part in the 2006 Olympic Games. After his career, Cirone worked as a coach.
