More than a Herculean task: Italy hopes for a miracle

Italy's women's national ice hockey team surprised everyone by reaching the quarterfinals at the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Now, Eric Bouchard's team faces the ultimate challenge, as they meet the formidable Americans on Friday.

Before the tournament, few had predicted a victory, let alone a quarter-final appearance for the Azzurre. However, the home favorites surprised everyone, beating France and Japan and securing their place in the quarter-finals early – for the first time in Olympic history.

Had Laura Lobis and her teammates won their final group match against Germany, they would have faced Canada instead of the USA in the quarterfinals. This wouldn't have changed much, as both nations have consistently claimed gold and silver medals at every Winter Games to date. However, the Americans are considered slightly stronger in this tournament.

Bouchard is confident

The team led by superstar Hillary Knight has scored 20 goals in four games – and conceded only one. The Americans also easily defeated the reigning Olympic champions, Canada, 5-0. Given these circumstances, one might feel apprehensive – but not Italian coach Eric Bouchard. "We see this game primarily as a great opportunity. The pressure is entirely on the shoulders of the Americans," the Canadian emphasizes.

Bouchard expects his players to display the same virtues they showed in the group stage. "Our task is to concentrate on the things we can control. We want to play with the same attitude and aggressive mentality," says Bouchard, who adds: "I saw the players very focused in today's training session. It was the best session since we arrived. They are ready to give everything for Italy. The desire to put on a great performance is immense."

The match will not take place in the Santa Giulia Arena, but in the smaller Milano Rho Arena, which has been erected at the exhibition grounds. The first-ever women's football meeting between these two nations is scheduled for 9:10 PM.

Friday, February 13th:
Czech Republic – Sweden (4:40 pm)
Italy – USA (9:10 PM)

Saturday, February 14st:
