Austria defends itself bravely, but in vain

As feared, Austria also lost its fourth appearance at the Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland and Latvia.

Head coach Roger Bader's team lost 1:4 (0:0,1:2,0:2) against the USA in Tampere on Wednesday. Captain Thomas Raffl scored his third goal at the World Cup in the power play (38th) to make it 1-1. 57 seconds later the Americans were ahead again. The biggest shortcoming of the ÖEHV team remains the exploitation of opportunities.

Rocco Grimaldi (28th), Carter Mazur (39th), Lane Hutson (44th) and Nick Perbix (58th) into the empty goal ensured the US team's fourth success at this World Cup. If the Austrians, who still have one point, do not pull off a surprise in the upcoming games against Germany on Friday (19.20:15.20 p.m.) and defending champions Finland on Saturday (2024:XNUMX p.m.), they will face Hungary on Monday in a direct duel for the ticket to the XNUMX World Cup in the Czech Republic .

“I am proud of how the team performed. We had a lot planned in terms of organization and we did it very well. We defended well and counterattacked well. It was a shame that we got the second goal so quickly after the deserved equalizer,” said Bader about his team’s performance. “The bottom line is that everything has to be perfect in order to score points against such nations,” is how the Swiss summed up.
