Placement match: Italy loses against Germany

Italy's women's ice hockey team reached the quarterfinals at the Milan Olympics on Monday. The following day, the Azzurre narrowly lost their placement game against Germany.

After conceding a late goal with one and a half minutes remaining in the final period, Italy was defeated 1-2 by Germany on Tuesday evening. This leaves the Blue Team, which had already caused a sensation at the Olympics with two victories against France and Japan, finishing the group stage in third place behind Sweden and Germany.

Italy had taken the lead against Germany early in the second period through Anna Caumo. The shot from the Bruneck native, who scored her first Olympic goal, was deflected by Justine Reyes. About 10 minutes later, Italy equalized at 1-1 after a quick counterattack that Franziska Stocker couldn't stop in the slot. Germany then scored the game-winning goal shortly before the final buzzer, as Italy was caught on the counterattack again just before the end of the game.

Looking for quarter-final opponent

Italy doesn't yet know its opponent for the quarterfinals. To explain briefly: The five teams in Group A automatically qualified for the quarterfinals before the Olympic tournament. As the third-placed team in Group B, the Azzurre will face the winner of Group A. That will be either Canada or the USA. One thing is certain: In the quarterfinals, which will be played on Friday or Saturday, Italy will be the clear underdog against one of these two powerhouses.
