Injured top talent: Controversy after Italy match

Italy's national ice hockey team is fighting to avoid relegation at the World Championship. However, they are now facing considerable criticism from Sweden.

It was a valiant performance that Italy's team delivered against ice hockey powerhouse Sweden at the World Championship on Friday evening. The Azzurri fought valiantly, but ultimately had to concede a 0-3 defeat. However, this match continues to make waves in the days that follow: The reason being the injury to Sweden's top prospect, Anton Frondell.

What happened? In the final period, the Chicago Blackhawks forward was chasing a puck when he got his foot caught on the unlocked substitution door of Italy's bench. His face contorted in pain, the 19-year-old limped to the bench and was unable to continue playing. Frondell also missed Saturday night's game against Norway.

Trouble among the Swedes

"Seriously, that's extremely dangerous. The spleen could rupture, the ribs could tear, the whole tournament could be over. That was a bad move by Italy's officials," said TV expert Erik Granqvist on the program. Viaplay. Lucas Raymond, Frondell's teammate, also spoke frankly. "You can get seriously injured there; you never want to see something like that. Luckily, he seems to be doing quite well," said the Detroit Red Wings forward.

Frondell, who was selected third overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, missed Saturday's game against Norway, which Sweden lost 2-3. The Tre Kronor now need other teams to help them if they want to qualify for the quarterfinals.
