At the players' urging: Oilers fire coach

The Edmonton Oilers are getting a new coach after their early exit from the NHL playoffs.

The Canadians parted ways with head coach Kris Knoblauch. The 47-year-old had taken over the team, which includes ice hockey superstar Connor McDavid, in November 2023. His assistant coach, Mark Stuart, was also dismissed.

“After a thorough analysis of last season, we believe these changes are necessary. We are grateful to Kris and Mark for their contributions to our organization and wish them all the best for the future,” said General Manager Stan Bowman.

According to media reports, the players and management of the franchise were dissatisfied with Knoblauch's tactics and lineup choices. Following this latest setback in the Stanley Cup race, the Canadians are reportedly eyeing former Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy as his successor.
