Three dead in accident: Canadian ice hockey mourns

Canadian ice hockey is mourning the loss of three junior players who died in a traffic accident on their way to practice.

According to police, the deceased were two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old from the Southern Alberta Mustangs Junior Hockey Club. The vehicle carrying the teenagers was involved in an accident with a semi-trailer truck on Monday morning (local time) in the province of Alberta. The truck driver sustained minor injuries.

Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta, expressed her condolences to those affected. "The entire Alberta hockey family stands with you in your grief and in your prayers," she wrote on social media. "I am certain that the people of Alberta will stand with these families and this team in the coming days with love and support as they go through a pain that no one should ever have to endure."

Flames hold a minute of silence

The accident occurred about an hour's drive from Calgary. The Calgary Flames NHL team held a moment of silence for the victims before their home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team had previously expressed their condolences via social media.

The tragedy brought back memories in Canada of a serious accident in April 2018, when a bus carrying members of a junior ice hockey team also collided with a semi-trailer truck. Sixteen people were killed and 13 others were injured in that accident.
