NHL at 41: Veteran Ovechkin adds another year

Russia's ice hockey veteran Alexander Ovechkin will play another season in the National Hockey League.

The 40-year-old announced in a statement on Thursday that he intends to play another year for the Washington Capitals. It will be the 22nd NHL season for the longtime Capitals captain.

Ovechkin holds the scoring record with 929 goals in 1.573 regular-season games. Including playoff games, he has scored over 1.000 goals.

Still a high performer

Ovechkin, who will turn 41 in September, led Washington to the Stanley Cup in 2018. "I'm healthy. I love playing hockey and fighting for wins," he said about his decision to continue.
