Ottawa's bitter setback in the capital

The Ottawa Senators suffered a bitter setback in their fight for playoff spots with a 1:4 loss against the Washington Capitals.

Despite clear advantages in shots on goal (35:25) and chances, the Senators repeatedly failed against Capitals goalie Logan Thompson, who shone with 34 saves.

The game turned in the second period: Within just over ten minutes, Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson put the Capitals in the lead. Ottawa had no answer. Two late empty-net goals made the scoreline more decisive than the flow of the game warranted. The only bright spot for the visitors was Tim Stützle, who scored a spectacular goal shortly before the end, ending his brief scoring drought.

For Ottawa, the loss represents a setback: they are currently five points behind the Eastern Conference wild card spots. However, the Senators had recently been on a strong comeback, with an 11-3-2 run in their last 16 games.

The results from last night:

Carolina Hurricanes – Pittsburgh Penguins 6:5 aet
New York Rangers – New Jersey Devils 3:6
Washington Capitals - Ottawa Senators 4:1
Calgary Flames – St. Louis Blues 2:1 nP
Colorado Avalanche – Dallas Stars 1:2 nP
Anaheim Ducks – Philadelphia Flyers 2:3 aet
