The decisive factor in the celebrated home victory was a lightning start by the Tigers, who immediately overwhelmed San Jose with a barrage of goals. The score after the first period was 5-1.
Filip Forsberg, Matthew Wood, the Swiss captain and superstar Roman Josi, Luke Evangelista and Brady Skjei scored early goals to give the game a preliminary decision, while veteran Steven Stamkos later added the 6:1.
While their direct competitors stumbled, the Predators consistently capitalized on their opportunities. The reward: They defended their second wildcard spot in the Western Conference and extended their lead to three points.
For San Jose, however, the situation is becoming increasingly dire: five consecutive losses are diminishing their playoff hopes. Youngster Macklin Celebrini and his Sharks could miss the postseason.
