Wild anniversary for Swiss NHL legend

He is already a legend in the NHL. Now Roman Josi has played his 1000th game in the best league in the world – and won it in spectacular fashion.

Roman Josi's 1000th NHL game could hardly have been more spectacular. The Nashville Predators staged a comeback on Thursday, turning a 0-3 deficit against the Ottawa Senators into a 5-3 victory. "It was fun," said a delighted Josi after the game. "It's obviously great to win. I think the way we won was just fantastic, as was the atmosphere in the stands."

The Predators had gone to great lengths to honor their captain's milestone. As he entered the arena, he saw the message on the wall: "Congrats on 1000, Roman." His teammates wore specially made 1000-game T-shirts on their way to Bridgestone Arena—as did his children, Luca and Ivy, of course. All the Predators players wore the number 59 and Josi's name on the back during warm-ups. The Predators' social media platforms no longer featured the Predators team logo as their profile picture—instead, they used Josi's face.

The 35-year-old tried to enjoy the day as much as possible despite his competitive spirit. "My children were there during warm-ups and read out the starting lineup. It was simply a special day. I'm so grateful for all the love I received throughout the day," he said. "It was, of course, a special game. It wasn't like any other game. But once you get going, you're naturally in the zone again."
