Italy loses World Cup opener against Germany

The Italian national ice hockey team started the A World Championships in Stockholm with a defeat. Exactly eleven years to the day after Italy's 3-1 win against Germany at the World Cup in Hanover, Rick Cornacchia's boys lost 0-3 against the DEB team.

The starting third was characterized by three power play situations for the German team, but the “Azzurri” went to work courageously and bravely stood up to their opponents. Germany captain Schubert fired the first warning shot at goalie Daniel Bellissimo's goal. In return, a powerful wrist shot from Rocco hit the crossbar. As Italy gradually gained more courage and forced their way in front of the opponent's goal more and more often, Germany struck coldly: in the 17th minute, Bellissimo was able to make two saves before Schubert made it 1-0 with a hammer shot from the blue line.

With the first chance in the second third, the DEB team increased the score to 2-0. This time Reimer was there after a brilliant pass from Ullmann. Immediately afterwards, the Italians missed the goal before Reimer once again forced goalkeeper Bellissimo to do something brilliant. However, the “Blue Team” didn’t give up and laid siege to the opponent’s goal for several minutes: Edwardson and Plastino missed the best opportunities. In return, Germany repeatedly used the insecurities of the Italian defense to challenge Bellissimo time and again. This particularly exceeded itself with two shots from Hospelt and Reimer.

In the final third, Italy took the scepter into their hands and put coach Jakob Kolliker's team in trouble twice through Rocco and Scandella. However, a penalty against DeMarchi dashed the Italians' last hopes. After just four seconds in the power play, Fischer scored from the blue line to make it 3-0. Bellissimo had no chance of defending himself when the view was obscured. Germany stayed on the trigger and skilfully exploited its superiority. Only the former Asiago goalie Bellissimo saved Insam and Co. from an even greater defeat. On the other side, Endras completed his shutout with blocked shots from Felicetti, Scandella and Sirianni.

Despite the clear defeat against the superior Germans, Rick Cornacchia's team showed good signs, which will now be expanded upon in the next group game against Denmark. This is on the program on Sunday at 12.15 p.m.
