The rising star The Olympic ice hockey tournament In the lead-up to the Milan Olympics, the Arena Santa Giulia was the focus of much debate. Observers feared the NHL might cancel its participation at the last minute if the centerpiece of the Winter Games wasn't completed in time. In typical Italian fashion, however, the Olympic organizers managed to finish the arena just in time. Thankfully – otherwise, the ice hockey world would have missed out on the best tournament of all time. What the world's superstars conjured up on the ice was simply breathtaking. The speed, intensity, and technical brilliance on display surpassed anything seen before. Moreover, the tournament produced countless stories that are etched in the minds of fans: from Connor McDavid's final curse to Johnny Gaudreau's children participating in the US team's celebrations, to Damian Clara's heroic performances. The twelve-year wait – the last time NHL players competed in the Olympics was in Sochi in 2014 – was well worth it, as evidenced by top television ratings around the globe. Many experts, players, and fans are already eagerly anticipating the start of the next Winter Games in four years. The relegated one Ice hockey in Merano As in the past two years, HC Meran is well on its way to reaching the Alps Hockey League (AlpsHL) playoffs. However, a dark cloud is gathering over the spa town: after the Eagles missed the registration deadline for the upcoming AlpsHL season, the unthinkable threatens the South Tyrolean ice hockey stronghold – a future without ice hockey? “Something has to change – either in the league or within our club,” explained President Stefan Kobler regarding the withdrawal from the multinational championship. Whether the club is aiming for a move to the Italian Hockey League (IHL) or will cease operations altogether remains unclear. The fact is: despite respectable results – including two playoff appearances – enthusiasm for the AlpsHL never truly ignited in Merano. Average attendance has steadily declined over the past three years: from 722 to 657, and now stands at 455 this season. Given this, it is perfectly understandable that Kobler and his colleagues are seeking changes and reforms. Should these fail to materialize, the lights could go out at the Merano Arena in the future. This would be a worst-case scenario not only for one of Italy's most traditional hockey locations, but also for the hockey movement in South Tyrol.
