Cycling world champion Oscar Camenzind at the start of the Ötzi Alpine Marathon

The winner of the Tour of Lombardy in 1998, the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2001 and the Tour de Suisse in 2000 will contest the individual race. After his career as a cyclist ended, he devoted himself primarily to mountaineering and ski mountaineering. “Moderately,” as he says. Camenzind has been coming to Naturns for cycling holidays for seven years. This is also the reason for his participation in the Ötzi Alpine Marathon: “It’s about a bet that a hotelier friend from Naturns came up with,” he says. Joachim Nischler and the bike guide Siegi Weisenhorn initiated the bet because an intense friendship has developed between the members of the cycling group over the years. “We are betting for honor,” says Joachim Nischler, before adding: “So far, the tour guide Siegi Weisenhorn has been the strongest in our group and we have to beat him at Ötzi.”

A total of eleven members of the cycling group are registered for the South Tyrolean Extreme Marathon. Each participant must deposit €250. If he doesn't show up, the amount goes immediately to the children's cancer charity. “But if Siegi Weisenhorn is beaten by one of us, then in addition to the lost honor, he will have to accompany all participants to one of our glacier mountains, ensure that provisions and all the extras are carried to meet us at the summit with wine, bacon, cheese, above all but to spoil him with his accordion,” said the idea behind the bet.

The 9th edition of the Ötzi Alpine Marathon will take place on April 14, 2012. The marathon route between Naturns and Schnals leads from Naturns via the Senales valley to the mountain station of the glacier cable car. Overall, meters in altitude can be overcome by bike, on foot and on skis.
