David versus Goliath in Val Gardena

While the focus in Antholz and at the other competition venues is on the Olympic events, the attention in South Tyrol this weekend will also be on amateur football – several interesting matches await there.

The Oberliga matchday features several high-caliber South Tyrolean derbies. League leaders Virtus Bozen face newly promoted Gröden, who, despite being bottom of the table, are considered underdogs on paper but should by no means be underestimated. The Green-Whites won the first leg in September convincingly 3-0. Following their narrow 1-0 victory in the city derby against Bozner FC last weekend, the league leaders travel to Val Gardena with confidence.

Speaking of FC Bozner: The Oranges face SSV Brixen in a traditional derby. Both clubs are among the biggest names in local football, but are currently going through a difficult period. FC Bozner hasn't won in four matches and has had a less than ideal start to the second half of the season with two defeats. This slump threatens to cause them to fall further behind the top teams – Virtus already sits six points ahead of their city rivals before this matchday.

Who will bring about the change?

SSV Brixen could be just the ticket for FC Bozner. The team from the cathedral city is also far from top form: the Blue and Whites haven't won either of their two games in the new year and haven't had a three-point victory since mid-November. The pressure is mounting, because without a significant improvement, the fight to avoid relegation could become a real challenge.

The third all-South Tyrolean derby of the day takes place between St. Georgen and Tramin, while Ahrntal hosts St. Pauls at the same time. Plenty of excitement is guaranteed.

The top match in the Landesliga

In the league below, Landesliga leaders Bruneck travel to Latsch on Sunday to face seventh-placed Latsch, aiming to extend their lead over second-placed Naturns. Naturns host Gargazon, while the top match of the Landesliga weekend takes place between Tscherms Marling (third place) and Terlan (fifth place).
