This Saturday, the time had come: the new Landesliga season, which the local fans had been waiting for all summer, finally began. It produced some astonishing results.

Gitschberg Jochtal, in particular, had much to celebrate in the opening match. The team scored six times to start the season and dispatched Schenna, who had only just managed to stay in the league last season, with a 6-0 thrashing. While Gitschberg were arguably the favorites in this encounter, few expected such a high goal tally. Midfield stalwart Lukas Acherer scored twice (32nd and 77th minutes), while Matthias Gatterer (6th), Daron Irsara (18th), Michael Hofer (29th), and new signing Manuel Pasquazzo scored the other four goals. With this, Gitschberg Jochtal impressively confirmed the strength they had on paper compared to the previous season – a true statement right from the start.

Ambitious newcomers Olimpia Merano also got off to a bang in the regional league. The spa town team beat Stegen, relegated from the Oberliga, 4-2. The prediction that Merano could be one of the league's big players this season thus came true in their first match. Despite Stegen's early lead and Patrick Bacher's brace in the 31st and 64th minutes, Olimpia remained unfazed and hit back with two braces of their own. In summary: a successful debut for Olimpia Merano.

The top strikers stand out

Another team to watch this regional league season is Salorno – especially because of the attacking power that South Tyrol's southernmost club offers. Both Fabio Bertoldi (32') and Simon Baldo (43') needed less than a full half to score their first goals of the season. In the 4-0 win over Freienfeld, Arfaoui Ala Eddine added the third goal shortly before halftime (45'), while Luca Poles (82') sealed the final score. For Freienfeld, which is likely a relegation candidate, this sobering start is a particularly bad start.
