A football club in Vienna – by South Tyroleans, for South Tyroleans. This idea, founded 18 years ago, has become a major success story. SG Südtirol became a cult club in the Austrian capital, where local students and expats chase after the ball. Today, the club is not just a football team, but a social meeting place for South Tyroleans in Vienna.
SG Südtirol has consistently attracted attention in the sporting arena, including last year when the local team won the DSG Cup for the first time in the large Ernst Happel Stadium. To explain: The final of this cup competition has been held for some time now in the Arena am Prater in Vienna, where Champions League finals and European Championship finals were once held.
A picture from last year: SG Südtirol triumphed in the Ernst Happel Stadium.
And that's exactly where SG Südtirol hopes to celebrate again this year. The local team once again reached the final of the DSG Cup and will defend their title from last year on May 20th. In the semifinals, the team coached by Patrick Aichberger Fellner and Andrea Simioni defeated the current league leaders, SUSA Vienna, on penalties. Now they face the Vienna Internationals in the final. They may be bottom of the league table but are always capable of springing an upset.
This is the SG Südtirol.
It's already clear that May 20th will be a very special day for South Tyrolean football fans in Vienna. In addition to the players on the pitch, numerous South Tyrolean fans in the stands will, as always, create a lively atmosphere with choreography, posters, and chants. SG Südtirol is determined to continue its success story.
