In the derby: Ahrntal shoots St. Georgen into the valley of tears

This Sunday marked the fifth matchday of the Oberliga, with St. Georgen suffering a painful defeat in the "Puschtra Derby."

After a break of more than seven years, the eagerly awaited derby between SSV Ahrntal and ASC St. Georgen finally returned. Even in the run-up to the match, excitement was high, as the two teams hadn't faced each other in a league match since March 2018. Ahrntal coach Thomas Ritsch even spoke of the "derby par excellence," and his team proved he was right. Jonas Engl gave the home side an early lead in the 9th minute. After a scramble in the penalty area, he quickly slotted home, sending the fans in the "Toule" into jubilation.

The match was characterized by numerous duels and numerous bookings. With a quarter of an hour to go, the hosts weakened their own game when Noah Gitel was sent off with a second yellow card. Nevertheless, Ahrntal remained dangerous: substitute Matthias Gaisler doubled the lead with a header in the closing minutes. Although Dominik Lercher pulled one back shortly before the final whistle, the derby victory remained a 2-1 victory for Teldra. This means Ahrntal has cemented its position in the upper midfield of the table, while St. Georgen remains winless and now sits bottom of the table with just one point.

Tramin and Bozner FC still at the top

The situation is quite different for Bozner FC and Tramin. The Talferstadt team won 1-0 at home against Val Gardena in the only other all-South Tyrolean match – Emanuele Bocchio secured the victory with a penalty. Tramin also impressed in front of their home crowd, convincingly defeating Benacense 3-0. Alex Pfitscher scored twice, before captain Simon Greif made it 3-0. Thanks to these victories, both Bozner FC and Tramin now lead the Oberliga table with 13 points each.

Virtus Bozen also had reason to celebrate. The regional capital team picked up three important points thanks to a 1-0 away win in Mori. Things fared less well for St. Pauli, Brixen, and Partschins: The Oltradige team lost away to Comano, Brixen suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Rovereto, and Partschins lost 2-0 to Lavis.
