In St. Georgen, the specter of relegation is drawing closer.

Once the best amateur football club in South Tyrol, SC St. Georgen is now fighting for something very different. The team from the Puster Valley must – whether they like it or not – contend with relegation from the Oberliga (Upper League).

Two points to kick off the second half of the season, a lackluster 2-2 draw against bottom-of-the-table Gröden on Wednesday. For former Serie D side St. Georgen, the relegation battle in the Oberliga has become the main focus. After 17 matches, the Puster Valley team sits in 12th place, just two points above the relegation zone.

Section manager Georg Brugger had left no stone unturned during the winter transfer window. Coach Giacomo Favero was dismissed and replaced by Gianluca Cecere. Two high-caliber new signings, Antonio De Vitis and Herman Niava, were brought in. On Wednesday in Bruneck (played on artificial turf), Andrea Carlini opened the scoring in the 27th minute. Mirko Demez equalized with a penalty in the 44th minute. In the second half, René Sanna put St. Georgen ahead, before Antonio Volino scored a late equalizer in the 86th minute.

In the second match of the evening, FC Bozen faced Levico away at Borgo Valsugana. Coach Stefano Manfioletti's team hasn't given up on promotion to Serie D. Captain Mauro Rinaldo put the experienced side (average age of the starting eleven: 25,2 years; FC Bozen's average age was 21,8 years) in the lead, before Mattia Zeni equalized for Bozen (28'). In the end, former Tramin striker Nicola Della Valle and Matteo Trevisan scored after the break to secure a 3-1 home victory for Levico.
