New football euphoria in Val Gardena: “You can already tell”

From a sporting perspective, Val Gardena has always stood for good winter sports enthusiasts and ice hockey players. In the meantime, however, football has also established itself in the valley of the woodcarvers. We asked the president.

FC Gherdëina was still playing in the 2022nd amateur league in the summer of 2. With the signings of Jan Martin Vinatzer and Michael Bacher, they have since marched straight into the national league. The club had never played in the second highest regional league before. But Val Gardena also cuts a good figure in the regional league: Lukas Demetz & Co. are in 8th place in the table after the first two games of the second half of the season.

“We are very happy with the season so far. There are a lot of young people playing with us who have a high quality of play. This is the result of good youth work that has been done here in recent years. “In addition, the experienced people like Vinatzer and Bacher are of course important in order to keep the intensity of the training always high,” explained Val Gardena’s President Peter Rabanser SportNews-Demand.

At the end of the first half of the season and now for some parts of the second half of the season, Val Gardena had to move to Milland because the home pitch would not be playable due to the snow. “Our artificial turf pitch in Val Gardena is not suitable for the regional league. Of course that's a shame. But from mid-April I'm expecting some spectators in Val Gardena again at the home games," said Rabanser, who confirmed that there are now significantly more football fans in Val Gardena than there were in the days of the 2nd amateur league: "You can tell already".
“Football is a cheaper sport compared to skiing and ice hockey.” Val Gardena President Peter Rabanser

In addition to the two ex-professionals Bacher and Vinatzer, the president praised the team's playing quality. “The young ones can really play football. We only have problems on pitches that are difficult to play on and against physically strong opponents.” It is fortunate for the club that everyone in the entire valley plays for the same football club. “In Brixen, for example, there is the next club 5 minutes away. That's our luck. Football is also a cheap sport. Skiing and ice hockey have become increasingly expensive,” concluded the president of FC Val Gardena.
