New signing from St. Georgen racially insulted

The 2024/25 Oberliga season is only one matchday old and the first scandal has already emerged. The club affected is the Trentino club Benacense, which - or its supporters - apparently made some mistakes during the away game against St. Georgen.

The club Benacense 1905 Riva responded to the accusations on Friday with a short statement. "We are deeply outraged and condemn any act of racism," the club said in a statement on social media. But what happened?

On the first match day of the Oberliga, the Lake Garda footballers were guests at St. Georgen. In purely sporting terms, the match ended with a narrow 1-1 victory for the Pustertal team. Moise Drebli is said to have been racially abused by a Benacense spectator during the second half. However, the Ivorian was not the only victim of the supporter, as can be seen from the association's circular from Thursday. Line judge Hassan Ali was also "without a doubt discriminated against" by the spectator, according to the sports court.

However, Benacense will be able to avoid playing a game in front of empty stands, as Italian sports law normally requires in such cases. Because this is the first incident of this kind, the penalty will not be enforced, the circular states.

Coach Ceraso suspended until September 19

In addition, Benacense will have to do without its coach for the next two games. Massimiliano Ceraso has been suspended by the sports court until September 19th.
