Pure excitement: Lana guarantees survival in the league

Sunday saw the final matchday in the Landesliga (regional league). Lana successfully avoided relegation from the Landesliga.

In the Landesliga (regional league), the title race was already decided before the final matchday. Bruneck crowned themselves champions this season and will be promoted to the Oberliga (upper league). Runners-up Naturns can also celebrate their move up a division. Since Obermais secured their place in Serie D (division D), the yellow-and-blue-clad Naturns will also compete in the Oberliga next season. Therefore, Naturns' match against Weinstraße Süd on Sunday was largely meaningless. Nevertheless, the Burggräfler team managed to end their Landesliga season in style with a 3-1 victory.

The situation at the bottom of the table, however, was not yet entirely settled, with Lana and Stegen still on the brink of relegation and aiming to secure their place in the league on the final matchday. Stegen needed to win and hope for a defeat from their rivals in the Burggrafenamt region.

Pitch-black day

But against already relegated Schenna, the Puster Valley team didn't fare well at this crucial moment. After the teams went into halftime with a 1-1 score, Schenna scored a quickfire double from Veit Gögele (48th and 52nd minutes) after the restart, putting Stegen on the brink of relegation at 3-1. Patrick Bacher pulled one back for Stegen (68th minute), but another goal from Martin Klotzner, who had already scored the opening goal, sealed the Puster Valley team's fate with a 4-2 victory.

A glance towards the entrance of the Puster Valley revealed, however, that even a victory for Stegen wouldn't have been enough, as Lana managed the necessary draw against Gitschberg Jochtal. Janusch Garzisi scored the opening goal for Lana in the 27th minute, while Lukas Hofer equalized for the home team in the 39th minute.
