Far from being a stopgap solution: Simon Greif's new role in Tramin

A new matchday in the Oberliga is approaching. Tramin aims to break out of their downward spiral. Captain Simon Greif is leading the way – in a dual role he has held since the start of this season.

Four defeats in five games: Tramin's start to the second half of the season has been disastrous. Others would get nervous with these results, but that's not the case in Tramin. "It's nothing dramatic," says captain Simon Greif.

“Such phases happen from time to time in football. We are currently missing some important players, such as Alex Pfitscher (meniscus surgery/return in a few weeks) or Philipp Rabensteiner (health problems/return uncertain), which of course has an impact,” said Greif, who at almost 39 years old is still one of the best players at Tramin and shone last Sunday with a magnificent free-kick goal against Benacense (1:2).

Captain, playmaker – and assistant coach

Since this season, Greif has not only been captain, leader, playmaker and free-kick specialist, but also assistant coach of his Tramin team. "Actually, this was a stopgap solution in the summer," Greif explains, elaborating: "We already had an assistant coach, but he left. That's why I came to this role."

Greif is therefore on hand to advise and assist his coach, Andreas Viehweider. "We always talk before training sessions and discuss the drills and tactical aspects. During the sessions themselves, I naturally train, but I also slip into the coaching role from time to time, for example, when 'Fiffi' is doing specific defensive drills, and I then coach the offense," says Greif, who adds: "I feel very comfortable in this role, and it's no secret that I enjoy coaching."

What's the future like?

Is this the voice of a future head coach? "I could certainly imagine that, but it's still just speculation," said Greif. First, he wants to finish the season strong with his Tramin team. And what comes next?
"Giving up football wouldn't be wrong, but it wouldn't be right either." Simon Greif

"The passion for football is still there, and I'm physically in good shape. But I'll be 39 this summer. Quitting football wouldn't be wrong. But it wouldn't be right either. It's a difficult decision that I'll make in the next few weeks," said Greif, who has been on the pitch in every game this year except for one (suspended).

Tramin now faces two tough challenges: On Sunday, third-placed Levico will visit the lower Adige Valley, and a week later the black and whites will face league leaders Virtus Bozen.
