Bayern annoyed after Musiala shock – and Müller says goodbye

Jamal Musiala suffered a serious injury, Thomas Müller ended his career – Saturday evening was not an easy one for FC Bayern Munich. Some discussions were therefore considered tasteless.

Thomas Müller apparently felt the topic of a contract extension was out of place during the emotionally difficult moment of his Bayern farewell tour, which ended abruptly and without any crowning glory. The 35-year-old made this very clear in the gloomy catacombs of the gigantic stadium in Atlanta.

We have to be careful "that we don't have any tasteless discussions after someone has been injured," said Müller, rather annoyed, after the 0-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup. He was asked whether the Bayern book was really closed after national team player Jamal Musiala suffered such a serious injury in the game. According to reports from Germany, he is said to have broken his fibula.

Eberl: “This has nothing to do with reality”

Sure, the idea seems almost obvious. Musiala is out for months – and Müller will still get the extension the club withheld from the German record champions. "Just because you can throw around some ideas now has nothing to do with reality," Müller replied. "That's actually not on our minds," sporting director Max Eberl, surprised by this potential turnaround, had already said.

No, unless the unimaginable becomes reality in football, then after 25 years, Müller, a true Bavarian, played his 756th and very last competitive game in a Bayern jersey on Saturday, thousands of kilometers away from his beloved Bavarian homeland in the US state of Georgia. Goodbye! After 250 competitive goals, after two triumphant treble seasons (2013, 2020), after 13 championships, and so on, it's time to call it a day. A legend is stepping down.

Müller has to process everything first

"You have to process the events first. I'm still fully in work mode. Everything else will come gradually," Müller said of his feelings. "I'm aware that it was the last game." His closest and longest-standing companion, Manuel Neuer, hugged him on the pitch after his last, brief substitution, which was unsuccessful against PSG. "Thomas had a sensational time here," said the Munich captain, who is four years older but still indispensable in terms of sport.

Müller extension just a fantasy

That's exactly what Müller was and is no longer – Musiala injury or not. Coach Vincent Kompany had already switched from Müller to stand in for Musiala at the Club World Cup, but rather Serge Gnabry. He also came on against PSG when Musiala was stretchered off. Why should the coach or the bosses suddenly change their minds – for a few months? This question was asked by Müller in an interview with DAZN The answer was quite something.

"The question is a bit..." Müller said, continuing, "I understand that you're asking it. So I'm not saying it's in bad taste, but a bit... But it feels uncomfortable for me now."

While on vacation, Müller will have to answer the question of what he wants to do in the future. Continue playing? Perhaps in Major League Soccer in the USA? Or retire altogether? He had no answers ready before flying back to Munich from the USA. "We were so focused on advancing here. That needs to sink in a bit first," he said.
