Chaos at the Superclásico: 7 red cards and police on the pitch

In what is probably the most heated football derby in the world, the Superclásico between River Plate and Boca Juniors, unpleasant scenes broke out again on Sunday (local time) in Buenos Aires.

The chaotic scenes occurred at the very end of the duel between the two arch-rivals: After a controversial penalty decision, Miguel Borja scored 1-0 for the host River shortly before the final whistle on Sunday in the newly rebuilt and expanded Estadio Monumental in the Argentine capital.

After supposed provocations following the goal, a wild scuffle broke out on the pitch between the players of the two clubs and referee Dario Herrera sent six footballers and Boca coach Jorge Almirón off the pitch with a red card.

The rivalry between the Argentine capital clubs Boca and River is legendary. Due to concerns about violent clashes, visiting fans are not allowed in stadiums at football matches in Argentina, with a few exceptions. In 2018, the final between Boca and River in the Copa de Libertadores even had to be moved to Madrid for security reasons after the bus carrying the Boca professionals was attacked by River fans on the way to the stadium.
