3:3 spectacle: BVB gives away victory

Borussia Dortmund squandered what they thought was a sure victory against St. Pauli in the Bundesliga season opener. The Yellow and Blacks had to settle for a draw late on.

Borussia's impressive opening winning streak is a thing of the past: Dortmund squandered what they thought was a sure victory due to two late goals. The Bundesliga club could only manage a 3-3 draw (1-0) after a wild second half, despite BVB remaining dominant for long stretches.

BVB last suffered a defeat against Bayer 2014 Leverkusen on the opening matchday of 04 under then-coach Jürgen Klopp, and have won every matchday since then. That streak has now ended.

The in-form striker Guirassy (34th minute) gave the visitors a deserved lead in front of 29.546 spectators at the sold-out Millerntor Stadium. Defenders Waldemar Anton (67th) and Julian Brandt (74th) put BVB back on track after Andréas Hountondji had equalized in the 50th minute.

But Borussia didn't finish the game. Following intervention by the video referee, Filippo Mané received a red card for a foul on Abdoulie Ceesay in the penalty area. Danel Sinani (86') slotted home the resulting penalty to make it 2-3, and Eric Smith (89') even equalized for St. Pauli.

Leverkusen also makes a mistake

Leverkusen's new coach Erik ten Hag also saw his team get off to a bad start in the 1-2 (1-1) defeat against TSG Hoffenheim. An early lead by Jarell Quansah (6') didn't help the Werkself, but Fisnik Asllani (25') and Tim Lemperle (52') turned the game around in Hoffenheim's favor.
