Ingolstadt is the rule breaker, so to speak: The Schanzer, who are now at home in the 3rd division, are the first professional club in German men's football to rely on a woman as head coach. Her name is Sabrina Wittmann and she is 32 years old.
Wittmann herself was born in Ingolstadt and now coaches her hometown club - also a rarity in professional football. Since 2017, she coached the youth section of FC Ingolstadt before being appointed interim coach of the first team at the beginning of May this year. Wittmann was successful and remained undefeated in four games - including winning the Bavarian State Cup.
FC Ingolstadt has been training at the facility in Latsch since Sunday.
That's why Wittmann was appointed head coach for the new season. This Tuesday, FC Ingolstadt will play its first friendly match in Latsch. At 19 p.m., Wittmann's protégés will face a local Vinschgau selection.
