Double strike in 3 minutes: Bayern's Leipzig nightmare continues

Although Vincent Kompany's team struggled for a long time against RB Leipzig's brilliant goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt, they ultimately advanced to the DFB Cup semi-finals as the last team to qualify. The semi-final draw, featuring Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart, and SC Freiburg, will take place on February 22nd.

In front of Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, Harry Kane coolly converted a penalty in the 64th minute of a do-or-die match that lacked intensity for much of the game. The England striker has now converted 32 of his 34 penalties. And perhaps even more impressively, it was Kane's 39th goal of the season in his 34th competitive appearance.

Just three minutes later, Luis Diaz (67th minute), who had even scored a hat trick against TSG Hoffenheim in the last match, sealed the victory in front of 75.000 spectators. For Leipzig, it was their third defeat against Bayern this season – after 0-6 and 1-5, but this time not as painful.

The video referee intervenes early

Leipzig, who as promised had learned their lesson and didn't want an open exchange with Bayern, made the first statement. Yan Diomande dispossessed Alphonso Davies on the right wing and laid the ball off to Christoph Baumgartner (4th minute) for what appeared to be the opening goal. However, the video assistant referee ruled it offside.

Bayern, led by the agile Michael Olise, only gradually got going. Leipzig's goalkeeper Vandevoordt made a brilliant save with his foot against Kane, and Castello Lukeba just managed to clear a rebound from his own player Willi Orban off the line (12').

Vandevoordt again

When the visitors from Saxony looked dangerous in the first half, it was mostly through the speedy Norwegian Antonio Nusa, who was more decisive on the left wing than his counterpart Diomande. Manuel Neuer reacted quickly to parry a shot from David Raum with his right fist (37th minute) – after which Leipzig became increasingly passive.
Shortly before halftime, Bayern Munich seemed to be on the offensive. But once again it was Vandevoordt who first saved a right-footed shot from Aleksandar Pavlovic (45+5), before the Leipzig goalkeeper cleared a Kane header off the line a few seconds later.

Vandevoordt's show continued after the break. The Belgian was already moving towards his right goal line, but he still managed to save a volley from Serge Gnabry (58th minute). After a superb through ball from Dayot Upamecano, Josko Stanisic found himself completely unmarked in front of Vandevoordt and jubilantly accepted the penalty. Diaz then added another after a brilliant pass from Olise.
