Leipzig started strongly and took the lead after 20 minutes through Romulo Cardoso. Bayern Munich struggled with the aggressive play of the East Germans in the first 45 minutes and went into halftime trailing 0-1. A reckless foul by Nicolas Seiwald on Joshua Kimmisch also caused a stir – for which the Austrian only received a yellow card.
But after the break, the game changed completely. Leipzig conceded an equalizer after 50 minutes through Serge Gnabry, and shortly afterward, Harry Kane put the visitors ahead (67'). This goal completely derailed Leipzig's game. Three more goals from Bayern followed. In the end, the fourth-placed team (!) suffered a devastating 1-5 defeat.
