Heroic newcomer: HSV trips up Bayern

FC Bayern has suffered its second setback within a week in the Bundesliga.

Seven days after their first defeat of the season against FC Augsburg (1-2), Bayern Munich only managed a 2-2 (1-1) draw in the former North-South derby against Hamburger SV. Harry Kane's 22nd goal of the season (42nd minute) and Luis Diaz's tenth (46th minute) weren't enough to overcome the courageous Bundesliga returnees, HSV. Fabio Vieira, from the penalty spot (34th minute), and the outstanding defender Luka Vuskovic (53rd minute) scored to secure a well-deserved draw.

Despite the draw, Bayern Munich remain comfortably at the top of the table. Hamburg have now gone six games without a win and are still in serious danger of relegation. The match against Bayern, however, served as a wake-up call for their rivals in the fight to stay up. The newly promoted side extended their unbeaten home record to six games. Hamburg will have to wait for their next victory against Bayern for more than 16 years.

HSV on par with Bayern

Unlike their 0-5 defeat in Munich in the first leg, Hamburg were at least on par with the overwhelming favorites in the early stages. HSV's defensive leader Luka Vuskovic (6th minute) had the first big chance of the game when he headed the ball wide of the far post from a corner. Hopes were raised for their first victory against Bayern since September 26, 2009.

Bayern Munich's revamped starting eleven seemed to need some time to gel. Coach Vincent Kompany, at his former club as a player, made seven changes to his team compared to Wednesday's 2-1 Champions League victory against PSV Eindhoven. Among other things, he initially gave defender Jonathan Tah a rest in his hometown, bringing him on later.

HSV deservedly takes the lead

After nearly a quarter of an hour, Bayern Munich began to create more pressing chances. Michael Olise (14th minute) and young star Lennart Karl (15th minute) were both denied by HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes. However, Hamburg resisted the growing dominance of the visitors and remained dangerous. Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer had to make a brilliant save against HSV captain Nicolas Capaldo (25th minute). Four minutes later, Munich were unlucky when Joshua Kimmich's shot struck the crossbar.

Nevertheless, the hosts' lead, secured through Fabio Vieira's converted penalty, was not undeserved at that point. Bayern Munich remained unfazed by the deficit and equalized through Kane (42nd minute) before halftime. Less than a minute after the restart, Bayern seemed to have taken the lead – or so many in the sold-out Volksparkstadion (57.000 spectators) thought. Substitute Luis Diaz scored from close range.

But HSV refused to be defeated. Their defense stood firm. And despite the absence of numerous attacking players, the hosts sought their salvation in attack. Their deserved reward came in the 53rd minute with an equalizer from Vuskovic. Vieira had already had a chance three minutes earlier after a misplaced pass from Bayern's Diaz. His shot went just wide.
The visitors from the south struggled to create chances. They were even fortunate that Vieira's shot (75th minute) was blocked on the goal line by Munich's Alphonso Davies, who cleared the ball off the line for the already beaten Neuer. In the closing stages, Bayern pressed for the win – but to no avail.
