Championship party? Bayern must (still) wait

Bayern Munich could have been crowned German champions on Saturday, but the decision was postponed.

League leaders FC Bayern Munich did their homework for an early title celebration with a 3-0 home win against FSV Mainz 05. However, with second-placed Bayer Leverkusen's simultaneous 2-0 victory against FC Augsburg, the Munich team's 34th league title is still far from complete with three games remaining. With an eight-point lead, Bayern can secure the title on their own next weekend.

After some initial difficulties, Bayern's superior quality clearly prevailed in Munich. Leroy Sané (27'), Michael Olise (40'), and Eric Dier (84') created a good atmosphere, even though the championship celebration had to be postponed. Another disappointment was the fifth yellow card for striker Harry Kane, who will be suspended for the potential title crown in the next match against Leipzig.

Leverkusen does its duty

Leverkusen made it clear from the start that they wanted to delay the title decision as long as possible. Patrik Schick (13') and Emiliano Buendia (45'+1') scored the goals for last year's champions. But no one in Germany doubts that the trophy will go to Munich this year.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund continues to inched closer to the Champions League spots. Unbeaten in five league matches, BVB won 3-2 at TSG Hoffenheim and climbed to sixth place.

Dortmund took the lead in Sinsheim through Serhou Guirassy (20'). The BVB striker was denied a penalty by national goalkeeper Oliver Baumann shortly afterwards (34'). After Hoffenheim equalized through Adam Hlozek (61'), the recently heavily criticized Julian Brandt (74') put Dortmund back in the lead before Pavel Kaderabek (90'+1') equalized to make it 2-2. Waldemar Anton scored the winner for BVB (90'+5') in a turbulent final phase.
