Coach Xavi Alonso's team won 3-2 in Freiburg on Sunday and is ten points ahead of defending champions Bayern Munich with eight rounds to go. The Werkself had never achieved 22 wins in one season before in their history. Borussia Dortmund won 3-1 against Frankfurt in the fight for the Champions League places.
Leverkusen remained unbeaten in their 38th competitive game of the season. The league leaders' goals were scored by Florian Wirtz to make it 1-0 (2nd), Adam Hlozek to make it 2-1 (40th) and Patrik Schick to make it 3-1 (53rd). Freiburg was able to equalize through Ritsu Doan (10th). However, more than 2:3 by Yannik Keitel (79th) was not possible for Freiburg.
Dortmund confidently
In Dortmund, BVB successfully defended fourth place in the table, one point ahead of RB Leipzig. Mario Götze, of all people, gave Frankfurt the lead in the duel with his former club in the 13th minute. Karim Adeyemi (33') and Mats Hummels (81') turned the game around with their goals. Emre Can, whose red card for foul play was converted into yellow after video evidence (87th), made the final score with a converted penalty kick in stoppage time (93rd).Bundesliga, 26th matchday
