Olise saves FC Bayern from embarrassing defeat

FC Bayern avoided an embarrassing defeat against 1. FC Heidenheim in the long stoppage time before the Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

Between their two Champions League clashes against Paris Saint-Germain, reigning champions FC Bayern Munich stumbled in the Bundesliga, adding further tension to the relegation battle. The Munich side could only manage a 3-3 (1-2) draw against bottom-of-the-table 1. FC Heidenheim, but a last-minute goal narrowly avoided defeat.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany made seven changes to his starting lineup compared to the thrilling 4-5 defeat in Paris. Heidenheim initially capitalized on this through goals from Budu Siwziwadze (22nd minute) and Eren Dinkci (31st minute). Bayern, however, fought back with two goals from Leon Goretzka (44th and 57th minutes) before Siwziwadze scored another stunning goal (76th minute). But Michael Olise managed to equalize in the tenth minute of stoppage time.

This puts Frank Schmidt's team just two points behind second-to-last VfL Wolfsburg (25 points) and three points behind FC St. Pauli (26 points). Both rivals are in action on Sunday.
In the race for Champions League qualification, VfB Stuttgart, playing with ten men, fought to a crucial point against direct rivals TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, thus temporarily securing fourth place. Tiago Tomas scored the equalizer in the sixth minute of stoppage time, making it 3-3 (1-2) for VfB.

Hamburg saved after victory?

In the extended relegation zone, Hamburger SV have likely taken a decisive step towards safety. HSV won 2-1 (0-0) away at Eintracht Frankfurt and are now eight points clear of the relegation playoff spot. At Eintracht, the crisis surrounding their controversial coach Albert Riera continues to deepen.

Union Berlin and 1. FC Köln played to a 2-2 (0-1) draw in the relegation battle. This gave the Köpenick side their first point in three matches under coach Marie-Louise Eta. Union sits on 33 points, while Köln, with 32 points, are in a more precarious position. The same applies to Werder Bremen (32 points) after their 1-3 (0-2) defeat against FC Augsburg.
