“Pop star” Netzer turns 80

Günther Netzer celebrates his 80th birthday this Saturday.

The 1974 world champion was one of the most influential playmakers of his time. He played for Borussia Mönchengladbach from 1963 to 1973, then for Real Madrid for three years and finally for Grasshoppers Zurich from 3 to 1976. He won two championship titles with both Gladbach and Real.

"He always captivated people, whether as a player, manager, entrepreneur or TV expert. I am grateful to have found a good friend in him," said Karl-Heinz Rumenigge about Netzer.

Netzer was, alongside Franz Beckenbauer, "the first pop star of German football." "As an intelligent playmaker and charismatic personality, he brought casual elegance to the league and the entire sport."
