Guardiola set to resign in Manchester

According to a media report, star coach Pep Guardiola is about to resign as coach of Manchester City.

As reported by the British newspaper Daily Mail, the Spaniard will leave the English football club at the end of the season. According to the report, the Premier League club has begun informing its sponsors of his departure. It would mark the end of a successful era for the Sky Blues. Guardiola still has a contract in Manchester until 2027.

Speculation is already rife about potential successors. The most promising candidates are said to be former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, who was Guardiola's assistant, and Vincent Kompany of Bayern Munich. The Belgian played for Manchester City from 2008 to 2019, including three years under Guardiola.

The 55-year-old moved from Bayern Munich to City in 2016. With Manchester, he won, among other things, six league titles. The highlight of Guardiola's time with Man City was the 2022/23 season, in which the club not only won the league title but also the FA Cup and, for the first time, the long-awaited Champions League.

Championship still possible

Last weekend, Guardiola secured his third FA Cup title with a 1-0 victory in the final against Chelsea. It was already the second trophy of the season, following Manchester City's League Cup triumph. Furthermore, City remain in contention with Arsenal for their seventh league title under Guardiola. Their Champions League campaign, however, ended in the round of 16 against Real Madrid.
