In the Super Cup: Arsenal thrash Man City

Champions Arsenal won the English Super Cup on Sunday, making a strong statement in the process.

Mikel Arteta's team cruised to a 3-0 victory over FA Cup winners Manchester City in Cardiff in the Community Shield match. For new City manager Enzo Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola at the runners-up, his competitive debut ended in disappointment. Arsenal, after a lightning start, lifted the trophy for the 18th time and for the first time since 2023.

Riccardo Calafiori put Arsenal ahead after just 25 seconds – the fastest goal in Community Shield history – following a superb assist from Myles Lewis-Skelly. Kai Havertz (28th minute) and the in-form Martin Ødegaard (48th minute), with a spectacular goal, extended the lead for the well-organized Gunners. Goalkeeper David Raya was rock-solid against Erling Haaland and company.

The Premier League kicks off next weekend. Arsenal host newly promoted Coventry City on Friday, while Manchester City take on AFC Bournemouth on Sunday.
