Liverpool transfers 14 million euros to Jota's widow

Liverpool FC has put its announced support for the family of the late Diogo Jota into action and transferred millions of euros to the widow of the Portuguese footballer.

At the beginning of July, Jota was at died in a serious car accident in SpainHis younger brother, André Jota, a professional footballer with Portuguese second division club Penafiel, also passed away. Following the tragedy, Liverpool FC decided to retire the number 20 shirt he had worn since his arrival in the summer of 2020.

In addition to the emotional gesture, the six-time Champions League winner also announced that he would support the family of the injured international and pay his wife, Rute Cardoso, whom he married just two weeks before his death, his remaining salary. Liverpool now followed his words with action and transferred a total of €14 million to Cardoso, which Jota would have earned until the end of his contract in the summer of 2027.

Arne Slot praises Liverpool's action

For Arne Slot, the LFC coach, the process is anything but self-evident. "Owners are mainly criticized, just like managers, but the way they handled this situation by paying his wife and children all the money from the contract is commendable," the Dutchman said in an interview with TNT Sports. "Maybe people think that's normal, but it's not in football."
